Welcome to Waxahachie Downtown! The Downtown Square
in Waxahachie, with its charming turn-of-the-century architecture and friendly
people, is truly a time capsule of an era long since past. One can easily take a
step back, for just a little while, to a place and time when values were a
little clearer and life a little simpler. Waxahachie offers the visitor this
opportunity to use their imagination to go back to another era such as turn of
the century 1905, or perhaps the roaring 1920's by just walking the downtown
square. Your imagination is your only limitation! If it's shopping or antiques
you are looking for, the Downtown Square is home to many unique gifts and
antique shops and fine restaurants just waiting to be discovered and explored!
The Texas State Legislature created Ellis County on
December 20, 1849 with land drawn from Navarro County. The county was named
after Richard Ellis, who presided over the 1836 Texas Constitutional Convention.
Waxahachie was established as the county seat in August 1850 on land donated by
Emory W. Rogers, a pioneer settler. The town name comes from an Indian word
meaning "cow", and it's also the name of a local creek. Waxahachie has 227
properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This is 20% of
the Texas entries in the Register.
Waxahachie definitely deserves more than a weekend visit. The
